Summer Reading Flyers

Summer Reading Flyer

pawsStudents will collaborate in pairs to create a flyer to share with students in the first, second, or third grades about summer reading goals. Why is it important to read over the summer? What great books have you enjoyed and what do you recommend?

  • Printing Press – partners will design a flyer to share all the ways younger students can keep reading over the summer break.
  • Rubric – a rubric is a scoring tool that shows what elements your work needs to show to receive a rating score from 1 to 3.
  • Here is an example of a Summer Reading Flyer at nmfoley

Directions

  • Go to the Printing Press site and click on START to create a new document.
  • Select the flyer you would like and then click YES at the prompt (or NO if you want to choose a different layout).
  • Begin to add your text and graphics. You want to keep your information short and don’t make your font too large.
  • Don’t forget to include text features such as titles, charts, photographs, graphics, bold words.
  • Look at the list below to make sure your flyer has all the right information.
  • When you are finished with your flyer, click NEXT and click Save as Draft.
  • Use your first names to name your file: for example jonathan and christopher
  • Click on Save and then save file under Documents
  • Flyers will be downloaded and printed for you to pass out.

Your Flyer Should Include:

  • Reasons why it is important to read 20 minutes a day.
  • Book recommendations or book list – you can make a list of great book titles or favorite book series or popular authors, or all three! Or you could try listing books by themes or genres (beach books, animal stories, graphic novels).
  • Graphics or photographs.
  • Text features – include headings or titles, maps, charts, photographs, bold words.

Why Should Kids Read Over the Summer?

Studies have repeatedly shown that children are in danger of losing reading skills over summer vacation. This is known as “summer slide” and can account for a big loss in reading skills all the way to the end of high school. When kids choose books they want to read and talk to their families about what they are reading, their summer reading levels can rise and prevent summer slide.
