A Magical Summer of Reading!

Welcome to A Magical Summer of Reading! Did you know that Braddock Eagles could avoid summer reading loss by reading just 6 books this summer? This summer reading loss is commonly known as “summer slide” and is the academic loss children experience when they are away from school for an extended period of time over summer vacation. Children who do not read over the summer can lose up to 3 months reading progress and that loss has a cumulative long term effect.

Don’t worry Eagles, the BES Library has your back! Read on to discover lots of fun ways to keep your reading habits on point for the upcoming school year.

Locating Books in the Library

We learned that the Braddock Elementary School Library collection is located in a database called an online library catalog. The library online catalog is a great tool to help readers find books they are interested in reading because there are so many ways to search the library record: author, title, subject, series, or everything.

Let’s try a search by subject using the keyword or search term “Yellowstone.” Looking at the call numbers, what sections of the library will we be able to find books about Yellowstone?

  • Why do we have books on the same subject in different parts of the library?
  • Let’s brainstorm some topics together to search the catalog.
  • Remember the Advanced Search is a good way to narrow your search.

  • What happens if the computer does not recognize a search term? What should you do?
  • Remember learning a new skill takes time and patience. Don’t give up when something is hard. Learn from your mistakes and keep trying.

Advanced Search

  • What if you only want nonfiction books about wolves? Let’s go back to the online library catalog.
